The Ubari Sayan is a contrast in lifestyle for a young international couple. Both grew up in modernist urban environments typified by a prevailing minimalism. But for their tropical oasis in Bali, they wanted something with character, warmth, and charm. This imagining landed on something that feels both retro and contemporary, with its roots in historic Javanese coffee plantation houses.
The couple had fallen in love with a derelict villa set on a terraced river ravine property that had a lot of hidden potential. Much planning and design work was needed to completely gut renovate and expand the home, address the terraced garden hardscape, and add a natural-looking swimming pool. The results have made The Ubari Sayan their favourite place on the planet to unwind, enjoy nature, and feel absolutely at home in-the-moment together.
The extensive villa gut renovation included a complete revision of the floorplan layout, allowing the home to better respond to the couple’s lifestyle and the unique terraced river ravine setting. A studio annex and primary bedroom were added as part of the expansion, while exterior finishes, hardscape design, and landscape design were carefully considered to complement the existing property.
Interior design and custom furnishings were developed to bring the desired balance of character, warmth, and charm into the home. The design combines retro and contemporary influences with references to historic Javanese coffee plantation houses, creating an interior environment that feels distinctive while remaining comfortable and connected to its tropical surroundings.
The natural-looking swimming pool was designed and installed as part of the overall transformation, integrating with the terraced garden and river ravine landscape. Site supervision throughout the project helped ensure that the extensive renovation, new additions, finishes, and design details were carefully executed.
